The phrase “teach a man to fish” comes from a Chinese proverb, not the Bible. Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Teach a guy to fish, and you will feed him for the rest of his life.”
Matthew 4:19 contains the biblical verse that is usually believed to state, “Teach a man to fish.” Jesus is walking along the beach of the Sea of Galilee when he observes Simon and Andrew casting out their fishing nets. Jesus instructs his disciples, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (NASB) In the following verse, Simon, commonly known as Peter, and Andrew abandon their nets to follow Jesus, becoming his first disciples.
