Tintin, the protagonist of a Belgian cartoonist’s series, is accompanied on his travels by his dog Snowy. In the original series, Snowy is referred to as Milou, the artist’s pet name for his first girlfriend.
Snowy is a white fox terrier, and Herge has indicated that he chose this breed since it was fashionable at the time the comic was created. In addition, the artist drew inspiration from a cafe he frequented, whose proprietor was the proud owner of a fox terrier.
In the beginning of the series, Snowy and Tintin can converse directly. Over time, however, additional major characters are introduced and the terrier’s speaking role is replaced by a non-verbal humorous one.
