What Is the State Animal of Massachusetts?

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has numerous state animals. The state dog is the Boston terrier, the state cat is the tabby, the state horse is the Morgan horse, and the state marine mammal is the right whale. The state legislature acknowledged these symbols in 1979, 1988, 1970, and 1980, respectively.

In Chapter 2 of the Massachusetts General Laws, state animals and other symbols are described. This document specifies over sixty state symbols for Massachusetts. The Morgan horse was the first animal sign to be adopted in 1970, while as of 2014 the garter snake was the most recent.
