What Is the Difference Between a Stepsister and a Half-Sister?

A stepsister is the daughter of an individual’s stepparent, whereas a half-sister has the same biological mother or father. A half-sister can only be deemed a half-sibling if she shares one biological father.

When two people who each have children from a previous relationship marry, those children become step-siblings. Each child has a separate biological parent.

Nevertheless, if these two married individuals conceive a child together, that child will become a half-sibling to the elder children from each parent’s prior relationship. The elder children and the newborn share a parent, making the newborn their half-sibling.
