What Is the “C” on NFL Jerseys?

The “C” on an NFL player’s jersey symbolises that he is the captain of his team. The league began officially recognising team captains in 2007, permitting up to six players per team to wear the letter “C” on their shirts.

Under the letter “C” on the “C” patch is a series of stars representing the number of years a player has held the position. Each extra year of service as a captain results in the addition of a gold star.

The “C” patch is not worn by players on teams who choose not to use the NFL’s system. These teams select their own captains utilising an internal mechanism, such as naming a new captain each week.
