What Is the Average Number of Innings in a College Softball Game?

Both teams compete in a total of seven innings in a typical collegiate softball game. Each team bats and plays field defence during an inning of play. The host team gets to bat first. The home team typically completes three outs during their turn at bat to close an inning.

If the home team is ahead at the conclusion of the visiting team’s at-bat in the seventh inning, the game is over immediately. If the scores are knotted, the game goes on until one team has a higher inning total.

The longest-ever college softball game, as of 2011, lasted 31 innings and was played on May 11, 1991, between Creighton and Utah.
