What is my relationship to my father’s cousin?

If the cousin is the kid of one of the father’s siblings, the individual’s second cousin is his father’s cousin. Family ties are established through descent, starting with the first mutual ancestor or relative.

Cousins are relatives who are born to the same parents. Those siblings are distinct individuals, therefore moving up the family tree, the grandparents (parents of a set of cousins’ parents) are the next set of relatives. They are second cousins because the child of a sibling and the sibling’s cousin must travel backward two generations to discover a common ancestor in the cousin’s grandparents and the sibling’s great grandparents.
