What Is an “in Care Of” Address?

A “care of” address is used to send mail to a receiver who is temporarily residing elsewhere or receiving mail elsewhere. The correct approach to address the letter is to write “C/O John Smith,” for example, under the name of the actual recipient.

If there is worry that the postal service would not deliver letters with an unknown name, it is appropriate to use a “in care of” address when sending a letter. When addressing an envelope, the recipient’s information is put in the middle, while the sender’s information is written in the upper left corner.
