According to a 2004 SizeUSA poll of over 10,000 individuals, the average American male chest size is 42 inches. This is an increase of 2 inches from the average of 40 inches recorded in a comparable research conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture in 1941.

Depending on a man’s age and race, the typical chest size varies. According to the SizeUSA survey, men between the ages of 18 and 25 have an average chest circumference of 41 inches, regardless of race. In the age range of 36 to 45, black men averaged 43 inches, white men averaged 44 inches, and “other” men averaged 42 inches.
