Young praying mantids undergo approximately ten moults as they mature into adults. After each moult, the mantis is completely white and resembles an albino. However, the white colour is very temporary, as the mantis quickly darkens to a brown or green hue.
The majority of praying mantids in the United States are imported species from China and Europe. The California mantis is an indigenous species of mantis to the western United States.
Mantids are carnivorous and will consume any other bug they can capture. They share a tight relationship with cockroaches.
