What Is a Pipe Chase?

To conceal pipes, a pipe chase is a vertical space contained by a chase, or fake wall. A correctly built pipe chase can conceal plumbing from the basement to the roof.

According to About.com, cutting into existing walls minimises the enclosed area of a pipe chase. Long exhaust stack pipes necessitate careful installation and stacked chases through each floor of the structure. Soffits, which are fake walls that extend along the top of the wall towards the ceiling, conceal horizontal pipes. Soffits are also used to conceal parts of vertical pipes that extend momentarily from the existing wall, typically at junctures.
