What Is a Malocchio Prayer in Italian?

A ritual to banish the malocchio, commonly referred to as the “evil eye” in Italian mythology, includes a malocchio prayer. The superstition holds that the prayer is especially powerful on Christmas Eve.

A diagnosis of whether a person has been cursed by someone else with the malocchio must be made prior to the prayer. Three drops of olive oil into a bowl of water can be used to identify malocchio, according to a friend. The evil eye is present if the oil shapes into an eye.

People in attendance make the cross and recite “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” as the drops separate. “Father, this prayer is being offered for (name), and I pray it works in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” is then prayed three times by participants while making the sign of the cross on the individual who is ill.
