What Is a Double Root in Algebra?

When a second-degree polynomial contacts the x-axis but does not cross it, a double root results. From the double root on the x-axis, the parabola extends upward or downward at both ends.

Mathematically, a double root can be verified by looking at the equation for a second-degree polynomial. The equation has a double root if the discriminant, or square root of b2-4ac, equals zero.

Once the equation is fully calculated, two results with the same magnitude will be produced. Other polynomial equation solutions include having two roots with two x-axis intersections or none if the x-axis is not crossed.
