What Does a White Bandana Mean?

In popular culture, a white bandana may signify gang membership or a preference for a certain sexual perversion. The colours of bandanas have long been connected with gang membership, but the so-called hanky code is less recognised to the general public.

The wearing of a white bandana may be associated with multiple gangs. However, the connection is not as strong or well-known as the connection between red and blue bandanas and the Bloods and Crips gangs, respectively. Party People, Black Gangster Disciples, and Brothers of Struggle are examples of gangs associated with white bandanas in addition to other colours. Particularly in gay and fetish circles, the hanky (or handkerchief) code identifies individuals with similar sexual preferences. This is indicated by white or coloured bandanas placed into the back pockets of the pants.
