What Breed of Dog Is Beethoven?

In the film Beethoven, the dog breed was a Saint Bernard. Saint Bernards are enormous, powerful, but also friendly and gentle dog breeds. Despite the fact that their coats vary in colour, the dog in “Beethoven” was white with brown spots.

Originally, Saint Bernards were bred for rescue in the Swiss and Italian Alps. Their size and intelligence make them excellent mountain rescue dogs, able to traverse miles of snow regardless of its depth. The breed’s size can be daunting, but they are gentle, kind, and excellent with youngsters. The dog in the film “Beethoven” resembles a real Saint Bernard in that he is huge, clumsy, but lovable and patient. Saint Bernards are not heat tolerant, yet they thrive in the cold.
