As of 2015, the old curmudgeon Walter, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, Jose Jalapeno on a Stick, the high-energy Peanut, and redneck Bubba J are among comedian Jeff Dunham’s puppets. Some of these characters have other characters in their acts; for example, Achmed has a son named Achmed Jr., and Peanut interacts with Jose frequently. Other roles that the comedian has retired permanently include African American pimp Sweet Daddy Dee and Melvin the Superhero Guy.
Walter is pessimistic about everything, uses sarcasm regularly, and is known for his bad language. “I don’t give a damn,” he says frequently, a jab directed at Dunham or his audience. Every one of Dunham’s television specials has featured the character.
Achmed the Dead Terrorist was a failed terrorist who burned off his own flesh while attempting to detonate an explosive, resulting in his appearance as a skeleton. “I keel you,” he says frequently. This figure is used by Dunham to mock modern terrorism. Achmed’s son, who has been partially burned by an explosion, has a British accent and has no desire to be a suicide bomber, much to his father’s chagrin.
Peanut is a rambunctious purple character with little regard for others. Jose, who he mocks for being on a stick, and Dunham himself are two of his favourite targets. Jose has a heavy Spanish accent and is always reminding the audience that he is on a “steek.” Peanut also introduced the character of Little Jeff, which allowed Dunham to poke fun at himself.
Bubba J is a stereotyped white-trash, trailer-park figure with a penchant for alcohol and NASCAR. Dunham plays up the character’s ineptitude by denying him the ability to count to three.
