A French hat is typically referred to as a beret. This sort of hat is often made from very soft materials, such as cotton, hand-knit wool, felt, or even acrylic fibres.
The French beret is widely recognised as a military insignia in France and Spain. As part of their military attire, soldiers wore these caps, which rested slightly on one side of the head or the other. This style of hat was initially designed and worn by shepherds in the French Pyrenees to shield their heads from wetness while they were out guarding their flocks.
