Annie’s dog Sandy was played by a 6-year-old otterhound named Bingo in the 1982 rendition of the story “Annie,” which was originally adapted from a comic book series called “Little Orphan Annie.” Marti, a golden retriever-chow mix, plays Sandy in the 2014 film “Annie.”
Sandy was given a larger role in the first “Annie” film adaptation than he had in the Broadway versions of the show. In this version, Annie not only saves Sandy from the dog catcher, but also from a gang of boys abusing him.
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the dog that played Annie’s dog Sandy in the 2014 film was acquired from a shelter in New York (ASPCA). Annie and her adoptive father, Daddy Warbucks, adopt Sandy from a shelter in the film, echoing how Daddy Warbucks saved Annie from an orphanage. Sandy has tan fur and sharp ears and appears in various moments throughout the film.
