How tall should a coat closet rod be?

Coat closet rods should be 66 to 69 inches above the ground to hold jackets or dresses. When hanging a closet with two rods, the lowest rod should be 42 inches off the floor, and the upper rod should be 36 to 42 inches above that.

To provide garments ample depth to hang, rods should be hung 21 to 24 inches away from the rear wall of the closet. Double-hung closets for kids might start at 29 inches off the ground with the lower rod. On the rod, each garment should have 1 to 2 1/2 inches of space.
