How Many U.S. States Begin With the Letter “I”?

About.com says that there are four U.S. states whose names start with the letter “I.” This letter is at the beginning of the names Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. “M” and “N” are the letters that start the most states, with eight each.

The letters “A,” “I,” and “W,” which all start four states each, are tied for second place. Seven letters, “B,” “E,” “J,” “Q,” “X,” “Y,” and “Z,” do not start the names of any states. State Symbols USA said that Idaho was just a made-up word that didn’t mean anything. Illinois is the French translation of the Algonquin word for “warriors,” which is “Illinois.” Indiana means “Land of the Indians,” and Iowa was named after the Ioway, a Sioux tribe.
