How Many People Died Building the Empire State Building?

Official records show that five people died while the Empire State Building was being built. One was hit by a truck, another fell down an elevator shaft, a third was killed by explosives, a fourth was hit by a hoist, and the fifth fell from scaffolding.

From the bottom of the building to the end of the lightning rod, which is on top, is 1,454 feet. It was the tallest building in the world when it was built in 1931. It has 102 floors. It was the tallest building for more than 40 years, until the World Trade Center’s north tower was built in 1972.
