Although the International Speedway Corporation does not announce official attendance estimates, it is estimated that approximately 250,000 people attend the Daytona 500 each February. Yahoo! Sports reports that the event is the third highest attended athletic event in the United States, behind only the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400.
Since 1959, Daytona International Speedway has hosted this event every year. The race is regarded as the most prestigious on the NASCAR schedule and offers the biggest purse of any competition. The Daytona 500 has the greatest broadcast ratings of any Sprint Cup race since 1995, with more than 20 million global viewers tuning in for the 2006 edition.
