How Fast is Sound in Frames Per Second?

According to the medium a sound wave travels through, the speed of sound, or Mach 1, changes. Mach 1 corresponds to a speed of 1,122.96 feet per second, or 340.29 metres per second, in dry, sea level air at a temperature of about 25 degrees Celsius.

With increasing medium density, Mach 1 increases. Sound travels at a speed of 4,940.1 feet per second in fresh water at 25 degrees Celsius. Mach 1 is equivalent to 5,148 feet per second, or around 3,600 miles per hour, in sea water.

The only factor affecting sound speed in air is temperature. Although the exterior air pressure is employed to determine speed in supersonic aircraft, this is just a rough method due to technical constraints.
