How Far Must You Park From a Stop Sign?

Depending on where you are, there are different laws about how close a parked car can be to a stop sign. In some U.S. cities, a parked car must be 30 feet away from a stop sign.

The city of San Diego and the state of New Jersey both need 50 feet. When it comes to how close a driver can park, a traffic light is often treated the same as a stop sign. Usually, you have to park 20 to 25 feet away from a crosswalk, while you have to park 10 feet away from a fire hydrant. Near a fire hydrant or stop sign, the part of the curb where you can’t park is often painted red to let drivers know.
