How Do You Know if a Pan Can Go in the Oven?

Most cookware has a symbol on it that shows if it can go in the oven or not. Even if there are no symbols on the pan, you can still figure out if it can go in the oven by looking at the material it is made of. It’s important to keep in mind that different materials can handle different highest oven temperatures.

On the back of the cookware, there is a set of symbols that the owner can look for. Most of the time, these symbols mean that the cookware can go in the oven, dishwasher, on an induction cooker, in an electric cooker, on a gas cooker, or in a microwave oven.

The symbol used to tell if a piece of cookware can go in the oven is pretty standard. Master Cuisine and Tramontina both have lists of the symbols used on their cookware on their websites. Most brands of cookware have the same symbols and markings on them.

Even if there are no symbols on the back of the pot or pan or if the symbols have worn off, you can still figure out if the pot or pan can go in the oven. Rachel Ray gives a list of common handle materials and how hot an oven can get before they break.

As a general rule, you shouldn’t put anything in the oven that is made of plastic or has a non-stick coating, because these things melt at high temperatures.
