How Big Was the Largest Lobster Ever Recorded?

The lobster that was caught in 1977 and weighed 44 pounds, 6 ounces was the biggest one ever caught. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it was caught in the waters off the coast of Nova Scotia. From the tip of its biggest claw to the end of its tail fan, it was 3 feet and 5 inches long.

In 2012, a 27-pound lobster caught off Maine’s coast made the news. A Department of Marine Resources spokeswoman in Maine said that its claws were big enough to break a person’s arm.

In many places, it is against the law for fishermen to keep lobsters that are very big. In Maine, lobsters that are longer than 5 inches from the eye to the beginning of the tail must be put back into the wild.
