Sam’s Club is a chain of warehouse-style stores that sell everything from groceries to electronics to tyres to jewellery. The store takes many forms of payment, including food stamps, which are also called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP).
If you get SNAP, you probably know everything there is to know about the programme and how it works. There are a few more rules at Sam’s Club, but these are the main ones.
Stores accept food stamps
Sam’s Club, like a lot of other stores, has moved beyond having only physical stores to also offer online shopping. But you have to go to a physical Sam’s Club store if you want to use SNAP or your electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card. The company doesn’t take SNAP when you order online.
Needs a Membership
A membership is required to shop at Sam’s Club and other warehouse stores like it. You pay a fee, usually once a year, and then you can use the discounts and deals that the store is offering. If you’re not a member, you can’t shop at Sam’s Club. So, if you are not a member, you can’t use food stamps at the store.
The store has two levels of membership: the regular level and the Plus level. The Plus membership has more benefits than the regular membership, but it also costs more each year. You can join Sam’s Club for a lower price if you are in the military or a college student.
What can you buy at Sam’s Club with food stamps?
Even though Sam’s Club sells a lot of things, you can’t use food stamps to buy everything there. There are the same rules at Sam’s Club as at any other grocery store or supermarket.
You can buy food with SNAP, like milk, vegetables, meat, and bread. You can’t use SNAP to buy food that is already made or hot and meant to be eaten right away. You can’t also use SNAP to buy alcohol, items for personal care, or supplies for your pet.
What do food stamps do?
Not every family or person is eligible for food stamps. You have to fill out an application in your state. You can get into the programme based on how much money you make and how much you have saved.
If you are eligible for food stamps, money is put on your EBT card at the start of every month. You can buy food with your EBT card at Sam’s Club, grocery stores, supermarkets, and some farmers’ markets. Once you’ve spent all the money on the card for the month, it won’t be refilled until the first of the next month.
Does Sam’s Club accept help from the government in other ways?
Sam’s Club doesn’t take part in other government aid programmes, like the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). If you have WIC, you don’t have to buy qualifying items at Sam’s Club. Instead, you can buy them at your local grocery store or supermarket.
