Some plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride plastics, can melt at temperatures as low as 165 degrees Fahrenheit, while others, such as the plastic found in Teflon cookware, require temperatures of 600 degrees or more to melt. Most durable plastics will melt below 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
Plastics are polymers with a vast array of chemical compositions. Consequently, some plastics are extremely easy to melt, whereas others are nearly impossible. Soft plastics, such as plastic bags, would melt if exposed to boiling water at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas sturdy plastics can withstand boiling water.
